STEAM Fair

We have been learning about materials and structures… We have been making plans and designs…. AND TODAY, we finally started to build our play structures!

The classroom was buzzing with excitement this afternoon as the Grade 1 students started to build their play structures for this year’s STEAM Fair. We have play structures with pools, slides, rock climbing walls, and so much more! We will continue working on our play structures on Monday, so please feel free to keep sending in empty paper towel rolls, cardboard, recyclable materials, or anything else your child may want to use for their structure!

You are invited to come see the Grade 1 STEAM Fair projects on Thursday, March 7th from 8:45-9:30am. We look forward to showing off all of our hard work!

Please see the note below about the Middle School STEAM Fair:

The OJCS is still seeking about 10 judges for next week’s STEAM Fair.  If you know of someone in the following fields (a relative, colleague or friend) who might be available to come on Thursday morning, March 7, 2019 for about 2 – 2 1/2 hours, please notify Ellie Kamil in the office (e.kamil@theojcs.ca).  We are looking for judges with experience in the field of science, mathematics, engineering, technology and art.  We also provide a light breakfast!

Shabbat Shalom!

Creating Maps – Social Studies Project

Hello Grade 1 Parents!

Our students have been working hard to learn all about mapping. We have learned that a map needs a title, a legend, symbols, a compass rose, and a scale!

Now it’s time for the students to create their own maps. The students will each be making a map of their bed room. Each student has a planning sheet (in their note tote) that we worked on in class and a blank map grid (also in their note tote) for this project. My example map showed my bed, dresser, closet door, window… I have a feeling my bedroom is a little more empty than most of the Grade 1 students’!

The map should be completed by the students! You can encourage them to use colours and include all of the basic features of a map (title, legend, symbols, compass rose, scale*).
*Please note that the scale should be done with footsteps; just like we learned in class!

The students have until Tuesday, February 5th to bring their map back to class so we can begin our presentations. On the evenings that you are working on the map, you do not need to do your English reading homework.

Looking forward to seeing all of the amazing work!

OJCS Reading Challenge Update

The Grade 1 class was so excited when we counted all of our tally marks and realized that we have already passed our goal of 450 books!

We are still collecting tally marks for every book we read, so please continue to send emails and leave comments with the book titles you are reading at home. Let’s see if we can read 1,000 books before the end of the challenge!!

When The Students Become The Teachers

Over the last couple of weeks, the Grade 1 students have all become researchers and teachers who specialize in the study of the human body.

We kicked off our project by having a class discussion to decide which different topics we need to learn about in order to know all there is to know about the human body. The class decided on the following topics; a labelled diagram of the human body, internal body parts, external body parts, bones and muscles, and what we need to do to keep our body healthy.

In line with one of our OJCS North Stars (we own our own learning), the students went off in their groups to begin their self-directed learning. How did I group the students? Great question. The answer is: I didn’t make the groups at all! The students put their names under the topic that they found most interesting and wanted to become the experts in. The class was buzzing with research and learning! The students had a large stack of human body books from the library, iPads to watch videos and read/listen to articles from Kids Health, and some students even brought in books from home!

It was wonderful to walk around the room to see and hear the learning going on. Students were sharing their own experiences about broken bones, exercising, feeling their heart beating through their chest… the list can go on and on! This science project truly demonstrated our OJCS North Star – we learn better together!

Don’t believe me? See for yourself! This is what happens when the students become the teachers…

What happens next? We reflect! After the excitement of the presentations, each student completed a self-evaluation form. We will use this as a tool to help us continue to learn and develop our skills with our next group project and presentation.

What a fantastic way to end 2018! Enjoy your winter break, grade 1!
See you in the (secular) new year!

Social Studies – Community Helpers

Many of you have been following along on our journey through our community helpers unit through twitter (@lkrantzberg) and our OJCS Hadashot. Incase you missed it, here are the hi-lights!

For every visit, we did a ‘pre-visit lesson’ to discuss what we thought the visitors’ roles and responsibilities are and to create a list of questions for our visitors.

We were so lucky to have so many community helpers come visit!

Ottawa Paramedic, Zach
Veterinarian and Vet Technician, Madelaine and Tracy
Construction Worker, Tony with special guest Josh Zaret from Gemstone
Police Officers, Cst. Siddiqui and Cst. Beckett
Lawyer, Yasmin

After each visit, the students did a follow up activity where we discussed why our community helpers are important and what their responsibilities are.

Are you curious about which community helper presentation your child enjoyed the most?

See the students’ reflections on flip grid!

School Wide Reading Challenge!

OJCS is doing a reading challenge! The Grade 1 class has a goal of reading 450 books before the end of the challenge on May 1st. If (when!!) we reach our goal, we get to have a pizza party!

We are keeping track of all the books that are read for homework and read in class, but we need YOU to help us keep track of the books you read at home! Please send a note/e-mail/comment on this post to let us know if you read a book at home (in any language) so we can add a tally mark to our window.

Thank you!

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow (Thursday, December 6th) is the OJCS Family Chanukah Celebration.

The evening will begin at 6pm and end roughly between 7-7:15pm.

We ask that students please wear red, yellow, or orange; to represent the colour of the flames.

Our class has been working hard on a special dance performance! They are so excited to present it tomorrow evening.

We are looking forward to seeing you. Happy Chanukah!
