Mitzvah of Collecting Food for the Food Bank

Our Math lesson this week began by working as a group to answer this important question, “What do we still need to collect for the Kosher Food Bank?” The purpose of collecting data is to answer questions. Our students sorted and labeled the food already collected and will begin to develop the concept that a graph is a visual representation of data used to compare quantities. The concrete graph that we made allowed the students to see that we have collected more fish than Nutella and peanut butter. We asked the students ‘how we can spread the word about the items that are still needed for the food bank?’. Their suggestions were to post on our classroom blog and the school’s Facebook page. Please help us do a really big mitzvah and bring in as many jars of Nutella and peanut butter as possible.

Problem Solving

Last week we began working on problem solving skills. 3 strategies were introduced. In pairs, students used the strategies to solve problems and had opportunities to share their thinking with the rest of their classmates.

What great work from the students!
Here a group was able to show their math
sentence: 3+1, while also explaining how
they used a number path and a picture to solve the problem.

Students were able to begin to solve word problems with more independence by using an anchor chart that sequences the steps to follow. Knowing what to do, when you don’t know what to do, is a skill we’re working on!

Journal Writing

Students are beginning to work in their journals as they are learning to write complete sentences, they are using the Fab 5 for Writing anchor chart posted in our classroom to edit their work and are very proud of their accomplishments.
