General Studies Homework (October 26th-30th)

 Dear Parents,

  • There is a new book assigned for this week. Please have your child read M-W (book located in grey folder). 
  • Remember to use the reading strategies as a tool when completing the reading homework.
  • Please sign the reading log (in their grey take-home folder) each night (this lets me know the homework was completed) and your child will receive a stamp or sticker the following day. Online students received a PDF of their book and they too will receive a sticker each time the log is filled out. It is posted on Classkick. At the end of each month, the students are required to record themselves reading 1 book from their assigned homework on Classkick.
  • New Flipgrid-Follow-up activity to our Global Read Aloud. This will be posted on my social media.
  • Click on this video to see how we review short vowel sounds with our students. Here are the cards we use to help with b/d confusion and short vowel sounds.
  • Click here to learn more about Teach Your Monster to Read optional work.
  • The IXL program will be the math homework for Thursday. Log-in information is in their grey folders. Use the diagnostic arena only.

Tomorrow’s Math Homework

Please listen to this video with your child before starting the math homework. The students will be working only in the diagnostic area for now. It is extremely important that no help is given when completing this homework, we are working on finding their Just Right level. Once enough data is collected I will begin to assign work. Updated General Studies Homework Expectations

Dear Parents’

General Studies homework will be starting this week. Please read the homework expectations listed below:

  • Once we start the English reading,it should be completed each night M-W.  
  • Please let me know if it is taking too long (send me an email).
  • Each day, they will bring home their grey take-home folder which has their weekly reading materials. Please click on the helpful reading strategies link and print this bookmark, use it as a tool when completing the reading homework. Remember to sign the reading log (in their grey take-home folder) each night (this lets me know the homework was completed) and your child will receive a stamp or sticker the following day. Online students will receive a PDF of their reading materials every Monday and a sticker each time their parents fill in the log posted on Classkick. At the end of each month, the students are required to record themselves reading 1 book from their assigned homework on Classkick.

Our First Oral Presentation

The last 2 weeks we have been learning a lot about each other. Our students did an excellent job presenting, Let Me Introduce You to My Selfie. We talked a lot about what is involved when doing an oral presentation. The 4 main things they kept in mind when presenting, use a loud enough voice for all to hear, speak clearly, do not rush through your presentation and remember to make eye contact. These presentations have been sent home and the students are eager to teach you how to use the QR code attached to their paper cellphones in order to view them.

Well done, Grade 1!

Summer Reading, Math Challenges and Card Games

Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful summer weather! Remember to:

  • take a technology break
  • play outside
  • be kind to your parents…especially because they are still working!
  • READ!!!
  • relax
  • explore
  • document your plant’s growth, take lots of photos
  • use a deck of cards to play these games
  • challenge yourself with open- ended math problems
  • Have Fun!

OJCS Maccabiah Games

The day will be a mixture of team meetings on Google Meet (links will be on our regular class schedule) and a series of missions on the app GooseChase. This is an event for the whole family! Parents and siblings can all play together! Please let Morah Ann-Lynn know if your child is NOT going to be playing with a parent or older sibling so we can team them up with an older student or teacher.

Reading and Math Homework

This week the students have been assigned math homework on Prodigy. They have two weeks to answer all of the assigned questions because of Purim. The activity reinforces what we have done during our math lessons. They are asked to compose and decompose numbers up to 20 using concrete materials. Reading and math homework can be done on alternate days. The username and passwords are glued into their red folder. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Remember, each week your child should read M-Th. Our  our reading challenge Grade 1 goal is 300 books by end of May.
