French Update

Salut les parents,
Another exciting week full of learning and fun is over.  The students proudly recited the poem “Voici mon coquelicot” during the Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday.  Apart from that, they also learned the song ,”Mon beau coquelicot”.  We did different exercises where the students had to put the missing first letter of the word after hearing me say the word.  That exercise develops both their listening and writing skills.  In addition, I was reading different sentences to them with already familiar vocabulary and expressions, and they had to match them with the correct photo.  We also continued practicing our numbers and this week they need to learn another poem related to that.  Finally, we watched two stories in French, which they enjoyed a lot and afterwards they had to tell me what they liked the most and then draw it.

I am excited to share that we are re-launching the Scholastic Book Club! What is this Scholastic Book Club? Glad you asked! The book club is an EASY way to order books for your child to read at home AND each time you place an order, our whole class benefits! French Update

Salut les parents,

This week the students listened to a song about Jour de Souvenir( Remembrance Day), entitled, ‘Mon beau Coquelicot’, coloured a poppy and practiced reciting our poem, which they will proudly present next Friday during the ceremony. We continued practicing numbers this week adding the expression “Il y a” (there is / there are). With this new expression, they made examples about what can by found in their house, for example, “il y a trois ordinateurs noirs dans ma maison”, so as you can see, we are gradually making our sentences longer. They also separated French words related to autumn into syllables and placed them in the correct basket (see pictures below). In class we always focus on sound recognition and syllable reading using the French book Taoki. Every Friday, I check the homework so I was so happy with both their dedication and your support. Your effort is highly appreciated. Every time they bring home their work, I urge you to take a few minutes and go over it together.  On Tuesday you will find in their note totes their accounts for ‘Je Lis’where I have assigned 2 books for them to read and record.

A Peak into a Language Detour

We have been just over 30 days at school now and when I think of the Hebrew my students knew when walking into my room the first day and how much they know now, I feel so proud of them. It is the immediate feedback that I get/give from/to them as we travel this language learning/teaching road that continues to evolve and stop at both foreseen and unforeseen intersections; planned and unplanned interactions. The light in their eyes and the smiles on their faces when they get the connection between words, which in turn allows for greater comprehension and recall, is one of the best feelings when teaching a language.

One such intersection happened this week, as we spoke about Seffer Bereshit, before reading the Parashat Shavuah. As we began to review the first two Parashot from the past weeks, I knew most of them could tell (if asked) that bereshit is at the beginning/the start… but I wanted them to understand the why and to be able to connect this word to other words we have used/learned… so… I wrote the word בראשית (BERESHIT) on the board and circled 3 letters ראש (ROSH) knowing that we used it during different parts of our learning already (Rosh Hashannah, Rosh Chodesh, Body part, Front of line etc…)

Then I asked (the way I do every day during our daily quiz): Mee Yodeah, mee Yoda’at Mah Zeh Rosh? (Who knows what is Rosh?)

I need to digress, to explain that during our daily quiz, students are allowed to call out the answer – the person I hear first, sits down and is not allowed to answer aloud any more – this way, everyone gets to shine, and everyone gets to hear correct answers even if they do not remember… so it is a wonderful and fun way to review our increasing vocabulary.

The second the question was asked, a collection of voices called out happy to share their knowledge: “head!”  While some pointing to their own Rosh – saying the word in Hebrew. What a wonderful feeling! Then we moved to the challenging question, where else did we meet this word before? Now the room was still abuzz… but the answers were with question marks at the end of them and went in different directions… not really understanding what I was looking for…. They were thinking in English… searching for ideas from their past knowledge in the language they are more proficient in….  So I had to refocus them and remind them we need to search our brain for the Hebrew we know, and that I am actually looking for the word ROSH to be part of the memory (not only the meaning itself)… I gave a hint to think of our Tishrei holidays… now someone called: “ROSH HASHANNAH!” This got someone else association going as she called: “ROSH CHODESH!”

YES! they are in their Hebrew brain drawer now… 😉

The challenge was not over… now I asked them to look around the room and think what other word has a similar meaning (it also has the letters ראש in it). Curiosity peaked…. it was actually very quiet…. and again, they needed some hints – it is part of a routine song we sing daily… it is part of of the shavuah (week). A few more seconds… and as they were searching around the room, few students called at once: ראשון! (Rishon! Sunday!)  WOOHOO!

Now I added ראשון  to the board, beside the word בראשית and with their help circled the same 3 letters – ראש!

This discovery of course begged for more questions:

Me: Mah zeh RISHON?

Students:  FIRST!

Me: Lama Sunday Zeh Yom Rishon?

Students: Because it is the FIRST day in the week! It is the start of the week! It is like a number!

Me: Nachon! (True)! Mah od milah Le’RISHON? (What’s another word for Rishon?)

Students: ROSH! ROSH! ROSH!

Me: Lama yesh ראש be’Rosh Hashanah? (Why does Rosh Hashannah has the word ROSH in it?) (raised hand please)

Student: Because it is the first holiday of the year.

Me: Be’Ivrit?

Student: Rosh Hashanah RISHON ba’shanah!

Me: Yofi! Lama Yesh ראש Be’Rosh Chodesh?

Students: It is the first day of the month. It is Alef like ONE!

Me (not letting them get away with it ;): Be’Ivrit?

This is not an easy recall… we give time to think… to struggle… to search…

student: Yom ….  Rishon ….. ba… Chodesh (a bit hesitant…)

Me: METZUYAN! (excellent)! Lama yesh ראש be’Bereshit?

Students: “Because it is the first!” “It is the Rishon!” “It is the start of everything…”

Me: Az mee yodeah Mee Yodaat, Mah Rosh Hatorah?

Students: BERESHIT!

Connections made… for now! Successful detour! We will definitely need to return to this road again and again in order to not require a guide!

This is one example of the importance of digging into the language we learn. Learning a language is understanding it, not only memorizing words! We use many words throughout our day – a lot of routine words that the students are getting used to and understand more and more. it is these opportunities, to take words out of the familiar context and together discover it’s meaning(s) that allows our students to more easily fill up that ‘other language drawer’ and open it when needed.

This takes me back, to our daily quiz (חידון יומי)… as it provides the opportunity to work on the quick recall of a word, which one can only do once one knows the meaning with no context.  NOT AN EASY TASK! …and guess what… The students LOVE this challenge! If I forget to do it, they ALWAYS remind me.

Science Experiments

1B has had the amazing opportunity to take our science lesson down to the Maker-space every Monday morning. The maker-space is a fun space in our school where we get to explore, complete fun Science experiments and STEM activities.

In Science, we have been learning about seasonal changes. We just finished learning about what happens in fall and today we continued on in the cycle of seasons and moved on to winter. We decided to do a fun experiment where we looked to see how we could make ice melt faster. We tested it out by adding nothing, sugar, and salt to ice and then we waited patiently to see what happened.

Before conducting the experiment, the students made some hypotheses on what they thought would work to melt the ice the fastest.

Noah, Reagan, and Seth all thought that the sugar would help the ice melt the fastest as it seemed to be the smallest ice cube when we first put everything into the beakers.

Leni, Callie, Dahlia, Lev, and Hallie all believed that the salt would help the ice melt the fastest as it seemed to them that it was already working and already melting the ice. We also pointed out that during the winter, we have salt trucks on the road to help melt the ice.

Finally, Levi and Adlai both thought that they would all melt the ice cubes the exact same because none of them would be placed in the freezer.

So we put our ice cubes into the different beakers and kept checking them throughout the morning. We found that salt and sugar both worked to melt the ice faster than just leaving the ice by itself, however in the end, the salt was the clear winner!

French update

Salut les parents,

This week we continued practicing the colours, as well as fall vocabulary.  We have added verbalizing numbers and reciting 3 poems about the colours. The students also made hedgehogs with real leaves and they used the letters to write different words. We also practiced the letter ‘F’ and this week we will learn the expression ‘Il y a’ (there is). In order to save you from having to record the syllables, I will work with them individually.

Next week’s challenge: To learn a poem for Remembrance Day!

Canada Israel Friendship building

 

We had so much fun meeting new friends from Israel via Zoom today. Thank you to Mrs. Bennett who connected us with Gali Lev Ari’s on-line Students. We enjoyed helping them with their English, as we spoke of our pets, favourite food, animals, colours, etc… They were very impressed that we study in English Hebrew and French every day. We hope to meet again sometime soon. Maybe they can teach us some Hebrew next time…

Last week Miss Brigitte had a class on Digital Citizenship. After reading the book Unplugged the class participated in an activity discussing what being unplugged means.

In Social Studies we worked in groups to create 3 Posters for our responsibilities at School, at Home, and in the community. Collaboration to create each poster was an important part of the process.

The picture gallery above shows some of the different ways we learn how to read. They include Word Work Booklets at the reading table, using a Blending Board on the ipad to create new words, and relaxing while reading together during Hebrew class.

After reading our final book from the Global Read Aloud Last Stop on Market Place. we all decorated our own Gratitude Mug by adding Marshmallows to say what we were Grateful for. This makes a beautiful entry to our Grade one Classroom!

Just a reminder that tomorrow will be our dress-down day! All donations will be going to the Ottawa Humane Society!

Just a quick update that I have not sent home the logins and passwords for both the Raz Kids and the IXL. I am reviewing the Homework Bingo card in class and when completed I will send everything  home at the end of the week . A quick peek into our math problem solving class where we worked in groups to solve the Button Box Problem.

General Studies Homework!

I am SHOCKED at how excited the grade 1’s were today when they heard homework would be starting!

For general studies homework, we decided to go with a bingo board for each month. The bingo board has a variety of different activities that all target different concepts or topics that we are learning about in class. Students have all been sent home with a login card with their password and username for both Raz-Kids and IXL. For the choice board, students are challenged to complete at least ONE activity per week and they will keep this homework choice board for the month. Students are encouraged to make a “BINGO” line by the end of the month with their homework. The goal is one activity a week but students are welcome to do as many activities as possible. If you have any questions about the choice board please email your child’s general studies teacher and we would be happy to help! I know a few parents have asked to have some hard copy versions of the homework (for example, having a reading book rather than using the raz kids program) that can be arranged as well or anything can be printed from ClassKick or from the bingo board itself.

November Homework Board

RAZ-KIDS: in Grade 1 we are using Raz-Kids to help with reading at home and at school. It is a fantastic program that can be individualized for each student according to their individual learning needs and learning goals. I have created a quick video just showing how to use Raz-Kids at home to help ease any confusion.

 

IXL: IXL is the online math platform that we use at the school. This is also individualized for the students and the grades. The activities that are on IXL are the same activities and concepts that we learn in class so it helps to reinforce learning. I created a video to help explain how to use IXL at home as well.

Class Update in French

Bonsoir chers parents,

During this short week a lot of interesting things took place.The students continued to work on the colors and the fall vocabulary learning small poems and singing the songs. On Thursday, it was Global Maker Day so we had the chance to talk about recyclage(recycling), we watched 2 short films regarding the  topic and we created a poster with different color bins for the glass,metal,paper etc.

Today,the weather was great so we went outside looking for colorful leaves,squirrels,pine cones,insects,snails,flowers etc,describing them and counting them.The kids had a lot of fun.We also practiced reading the syllable ra,ri,ry,ro,ar ir. Please check their bags everyday because I regularly send home work  we do in class so that they can color,read the words and revise them. I am also sending you the class code for Scholastic and the flyer.
